SOI-Supported Microdevice for Hydrogen Purification Using Palladium–Silver Membranes

چکیده
High-purity hydrogen continues to receive attention as a promising energy source for fuel cells in portable power applications. On-demand hydrogen generation via fuel reforming offers a convenient alternative to hydrogen storage, but the concomitant CO generation is deleterious to the fuel cell catalyst. Of the possible hydrogen purification options, palladium membranes allow a compact design suitable for portable applications. We present a micromembrane device built in silicon-on-insulator wafers for hydrogen purification. The design imparts structural stability to a submicrometer-thick palladium–silver membrane, enabling hydrogen purification at higher pressures than were tolerated by previous devices with supported thin palladium membranes. The devices are manufactured using bulk micromachining techniques including photolithography, plasma, and wet etching. They are operated at pressures up to 2 atm with a correspondingly enhanced hydrogen flux. In particular, thin (200 nm) palladium–silver membrane yield high permeation rates of up to 50 mol/m/s at 350 ◦C. The different transport resistances controlling hydrogen permeation in the micromembrane system are evaluated. [2009-0202]

Development of Palladium-Alloy Membranes for Hydrogen Separation and Purification
This paper summarizes R&D activities and progress at NORAM Engineering and the University of British Columbia (UBC) on preparation and testing of thin palladium-based membranes and their applications. Most of these activities were carried out internally at NORAM, some jointly with UBC and their spin-off company, Membrane Reactor Technology (MRT) through a wide range of projects. Key results out...
متن کاملMicromachined Palladium - Silver Alloy Membranes for Hydrogen Separation
This paper presents wafer-scale palladium silver alloy membranes, fabricated with a sequence of wellknown thin film and silicon micromachining techniques. The membranes have been tested in a gas permeation system to determine the hydrogen permeability and hydrogen selectivity. Typical flow rates of 1 mol H2 /m.s have been measured with a minimal selectivity of 1500 for H2/He. The membranes have...
متن کاملMicrofabrication of Palladium–Silver Alloy Membranes for Hydrogen Separation
In this paper, a process for the microfabrication of a wafer-scale palladium—silver alloy membrane (Pd–Ag) is presented. Pd–Ag alloy films containing 23 wt% Ag were prepared by co-sputtering from pure Pd and Ag targets. The films were deposited on the unetched side of a 110 -oriented silicon wafer in which deep grooves were etched in a concentrated KOH solution, leaving silicon membranes with a...
متن کاملPalladium, Yttrium, Copper Ternary Alloys for Hydrogen Purification
Palladium has long been recognised for its hydrogen sorption and separation capabilities. Alloying with different metals to produce binary alloys has been shown to further improve many of its essential properties significantly. Currently palladium-silver alloys are used commercially for the hydrogen purification process, however, other binary alloys have also been shown to significantly improve...
متن کاملReview of Supported Pd-Based Membranes Preparation by Electroless Plating for Ultra-Pure Hydrogen Production
In the last years, hydrogen has been considered as a promising energy vector for the oncoming modification of the current energy sector, mainly based on fossil fuels. Hydrogen can be produced from water with no significant pollutant emissions but in the nearest future its production from different hydrocarbon raw materials by thermochemical processes seems to be more feasible. In any case, a mi...
